Reducing a mask

Reducing a mask
Thu, 20 Mar 2008 14:13:37 -000
When I reduce a mask, it never reduces evenly if it is circular. With the
letter "O", for example, the centre in particular will be very
noticeably
misshapen. I have attached a screen shot with mask overlay visible to
demonstrate what I mean. Is there a way to prevent this happening, please?
I have tried smoothing the mask, but that distorts it elsewhere.

Many thanks

Hi, Kate,

Let me add to Huib's reply :-)

Way back in (I think) CorelPHOTO-PAINT 7 or 8 we discussed this
very topic. The conclusion was it may not be mathematically
possible for a code engineer. We tried it in Adobe Photoshop and got
much the same.

However, there is a soft, medium and hard sitting I use with
Mask Border. We were hoping the code engineers would find a way
around this, but I've not seen a fix as yet. Haven't tried the latest
photo shop, however.

Attached are two screen shots using Mask Border.
I cut the center out and deleted it to form a donut shape :))

I think it is the nature of the best from way back when.

Attachments are below.

Use the Mask Transform tool to resize the mask.

As far as I can see, that tool only reduces the overall size of the mask,
rather than reducing it inside the outline of the text. In other words, I
get a smaller "O" rather than a thinner one and it`s the thinner one I
want
so that I can create borders by using subtractive mode on top of the
original-size mask.

Since posting my original query, I found Mask Border and have tried creating
an object with it from the original text. It works fine with very narrow
borders, but the mask outline still distorts badly as I increase the border
width beyond 4. This is in a 150 dpi documents, BTW, if that has any
significance.

Thanks, Huib
