can you give us a screen shot of before and after to see what's happening?

I don't know what you are trying to do, but merge modes follow a strict
mathematical formula. Take a look at the help file under merge. it says
Add adds the values of the source and base colors.
Depending on the two layers you try to Add merge, it could well be that you
end up with an image which looks like the original.

| Add merge mode |

When I combine a layer which has the Add merge mode with others, it loses
its vibrancy and looks as if it has reverted to Normal. I have to combine
all the Objects with the background and then cut the object out with a mask
for the effect to "stick". Thinking that it might have something to
do with
the white background, I have tried masking my base Object - which is always
set to Normal mode - filling it with white, moving it below all the other
Objects and then combining the layers, but it still happens. Can someone
suggest why this is happening, please, and how I can get it to work?
Many thanks

Duplicate the background object-layer and keep it over the Background. Merge
the other objects with the new object that is a copy of the background.

I have tried three times to post with an attached jpg giving an example of
what is happening. The third time, I used Rich Text so that I could insert
the image, rather than attach it. It is only 54KB, but still no joy. I am
giving below my replies to Hunter, Alfred and Michael and will try posting
the image separately.
To Hunter and Alfred : I have had a look at the Help file on Merge modes but
it doesn`t seem to make clear what is considered the "base" colour.
Is it
the colour of the layer just below it, the colour of the first layer in the
image, the background colour - or all of these? Anyway, here is an example
showing what I mean. The two small rectangles have the same fill as the
large one.
After some experimentation, I have come to the conclusion that the problem
is to do with the object`s opacity; at 100%, the layer combines without
changing, but at 50% (as in my example) it <does> change, although not
back
to its original colours after all. Trouble is, Add at 100% opacity is just
too bright!
To Michael : I have tried masking my base object and then creating a
duplicate shape from the white background, but that didn`t make any
difference, unfortunately, but see my earlier post re opacity.
Thanks for the replies
