JPEG issue
Tue, 12 Dec 2006 22:49:34 -000
Quite recently, I could not access my CD Rom JPEG files. On loading in the
picture viewer, the files are supposed to show. On this occasion, only the
icons appeared..

Fortunately, I had a spare copy saved on an alternate source. I was then
able to erase the CD and reload via the zip disk backup that I already had.
Of course, if I were to lose all my files, then the only hope available
would be, to send the disk away with the hope of getting them back. But at
an exhorbitant cost.

In case I am met with this issue again, then it would be useful to know if
there is a fix available. Any help might also be a valuable asset to those
who have accutally lost their images this way.

What picture viewer are you referring to? Just like Explorer, viewers
can usually be set for different display details. Did you check the
content of the cd with Explorer (set to show Details) to see what
files are there? The files are probably there but it's a viewer
problem.

Are you sure they were jpegs? If you view cpt files and have the
Corel Thumbnail Utility enabled, the thumbnail is very small compared
to what you get with a jpeg.

Hello Starman

First, the reason I rewrote the thread was that I thought that after coming
out of the forum, I lost the contents of my first reply.

Coming to the point. I doubt if by selecting the various view options in
the Explorer, that it would have made any difference whatever. The icons
that I was refering to earlier, was in the first instance, displayed in a
large format. When I tried opening them with my mouse, nothing happened.
In the preview menu under 'My Pictures,' it was coming up with a message
such as 'Preview cannot be enabled.'

Maybe I should have mentioned that I was trying to view the images through
Photopaint and Windows XP's 'My Pictures .' Still, I hope that by
furnishing extra details, that it will narrow things down a bit. And,
before I forget. All the files were in jpeg format and displayed to maximum
(as mentioned above) when the problem occured.

This is one of my preaching posts!

Are you sure the cd itself is OK? Cheap blanks sometimes cannot even
be read on the drive that made them. If Explorer in Detail mode
cannot see the files, it's a cd problem. Detail mode discussed below.

To check cd or dvd quality use Nero CD Speed, Scan Disc tab. I run
the test after every disk burn. Hard errors are where the infomation
is lost forever, soft errors are ones that can be overcome with the
standard data checking algorithims.

For attempting to recover cd/dvd data, Isobuster. Isobuster is a heck
of a lot quicker (about 20x) than Explorer reading partly corrupt
files or poor quaility disks. If Isobuster won't read a disk, you
have a disk or drive problem.

If you are handling many images, get a decent image browser. I use
ThumbsPlus, there are many others. IrfanView http://www.irfanview.com
is unsurpassed in freeware browsers. If you use a browser, many
problems such as you have just go away. In addition, you have
immediate access to a whole bunch of image manipulation tools.
Explorer is fine for convenience but that's all imo.

Assuming not a disk problem...getting back to the My Pictures folder,
what view are you using? Just open the View menu and see which is
selected. Change to Details, make sure you have the Size attribute
enabled (View/Choose Details). Look at your files and do you see the
filenames and are the sizes about right? See above about cd quality.

What is your default application for jpegs? If you double-click an
image does it start PP up? Personally I use IrfanView as my default
for jpegs. It opens up in a fraction of the time PP takes. It will
even tell you if the extension is incorrect for the type of image. If
I want to open a jpeg in PP, I start up PP and open from there.

FYI on my PC, time to open application/jpeg image. Time will depend
on installed fonts and how many filters enabled at startup.
IrfanView too quick to measure
PP7 2 secs
PP11 14 secs
Photoshop 6 25 secs

Thank you Starman for the useful information enclosed.

I have taken the liberty in saving the contents and like the previous
threads, will knock the various issues into shape and print.

If however I again cannot open my images, then I can refer to the adice that
you have given me with a hope of rectifying what's at fault and preventing
the images from opening.

I do indeed have the Nero CD writing software and a viewer, Picaso that I
remain happy with for now.
