action files

I recently ran across a bunch of "action" files to do photo 
retouching--like get rid of purple fringing. Presumably these are 
scripts (?) set up for Photoshop.

Can action files be used with PhotoPaint or converted? Or are there 
equivalents? Perhaps websites with PP scripts?

On another note, I DL'd a PhotoShop plugin called PFreree which is 
supposed to get rid of purple fringing. The plugin--PFree0-2.8bf--opens 
in PhotoPaint fine. But it doesn't seem to do anything. Is this 
"normal?" Do some Photoshop plugins show up in PhotoPaint but fail to
work?

PS and PP are different applications (many commands different) and the
automation functions are completely different too.  You would have to
rewrite actions as scripts or vb macros.  Not generally difficult but
you need to be familiar with PP automation.  Many people transform PS
tutorials into PP automation by the same process.

8bf and other filters don't necessarily work in PP.  A lot of filters
seem to be written exclusively for PS or PSP and won't work at all in
PP.  Some filters will not work if layer transparency is locked but a
decently written filter will tell you to unlock it.  If a filter does
not work I would try masking the area to process or apply to a
duplicate layer just in case it makes a difference.

A few year back I remember trying some 8bf filters that came with PS
in PP and they worked.  Most do not and the ones in the PS "Photoshop
Only" folder almost certainly do not.

Normally the filters that fail to work do it by crushing or hanging. If  
the dialog shows up and allow you press "Ok" button, when it should do
 
something, unless the filter misses something in your image, like  
selection, or sample of the color it is supposed to work with. I'd suggest  
you reading all the info available about the filter: maybe you missed  
something it needs.
