| Transparent back grounds for logos |

I scan logos for the brochures I print. (by off set)
Many times (almost every time) I get stuck with this problem.
When I scan a logo, I get the image in black with white back ground.
I would like to have the back ground transparent as against white.
Can any one guide me (step by step) to accomplish the task.?
I am working with Core Photo Paint 11 on WIN XP
