It's hard to tell someone what method to use for the mask, it all depends on
how you like to work and how advanced of a user you are. You can use the
Image/Cutout tool to produce a nice mask, I use the mask brush a lot, path
tool and channel masks. Anyway after you have found a way to mask your car
you can change the color by using the Hue Saturation Lightness tool.

something like this?
all I did was make a very rough mask outlining the car with the Freehand
Mask tool, never touching the car, though... always mask more than you need.
I made a new object from the mask (ctrl-uparrow) and then used
image/adjust/color hue to mess with the color. I then made a clipmask on the
object and just painted away the stuff I didn't need in the new color
(windshield, tires, the bits outside of the car, etc.).
This is not a great example as I only took about 5 minutes on it.
