Dead slow to nothing

Dead slow to nothing
Thu, 6 Jul 2006 18:09:55 -0400
Hi,

Of course this happens hours before one is to board a plane for the UK,
where the slide show is to be presented.

My final slide how has 19 slides in it, two of which include a variety of
objects that are called up one at a time (I hope that is clear). I've
avoided complicated transitions, etc; instead they are all set to appear
immediately.

I am trying to run this on my laptop, with a 1.6 Ghz processor, 768 MB RAM,
and a 60 Gb hard drive, of which about 60% is occupied. Plus I've set the
Windows swap file to 3 Gb.

Until last night all seemed well. Now suddenly Presentations is balking in
a major way at running the complicated slides. I've tried putting them in
a separate file, and they still take forever. If I use QuickPlay, the
screen first goes black for about 90 seconds, then finally the slide
appears. But that is as far as it goes. If I simply put them all in one
object, and remove the animation the slide seems to display OK. I've tried
to check memory use with Windows Task Manager, deleting all temporary files,
etc. There should be no problem, but problem there is.

Any suggestions? Please?????

What transition effects are you using? What is the video card on that
machine?
BTW... don't forget to save various versions of the file!

Try check "take full advantage of video memory to maximize
transitions"
under TOOLS/SETTINGS/DISPLAY

Have you resampled your raster images (jpg)? Right click on the graphic
and choose "resample".

DOn't forget to save versions!! (broken record, I know).

In case someone is trying to puzzle this one out with me.

I tried the following: created a new user, and copied the slide show file
to that user. I made sure nothing else was running, then tried the slide
show from within presentations. Same results. I was able to load Windows
Taks Manager, and in the Applications list Presentations was shown as "Not

Responding" --- which is usually a Windows XP message telling me that the
program is using too much memory. At the same time, the Processes list
shows PrWin12.exe gradually using more and more memory until finally the
slide is displayed. That can take up to 90 seconds (if you consider that I
have just 20 minutes to make my presentation, and have to talk about 17
slides (the first and last being gratis) you can imagine: an entire
audience watching paint dry is no fun. For the two slides the load time
amounts to 3 minutes, which is more than 10% of my total time allotment.

I tried creating a "Show on the Go" version, and that does run fine.
The
file size goes from 82 MB to 4.28 MB in size. But this is at the expense
of image resolution. I copied the two complex slides into a separate Pres
file, and see that they represent about 25% of the total size.

I am not prepared to buy another block of memory just to speed this up,
since I will be replacing this laptop in the very near future. Besides,
there isn't enough time to get additional memory anyway, except at great
cost, since my flight is on Saturday, and the presentation on Tuesday. In
England.

So a supplementary question: Is there a way to control the image
resolution for a Show on the Go conversion? There is precious little by
way of help from the Help files, it seems.

Joel,

I did some poking around on the Corel website itself, and am following some
advice I found
there about the size of image files. Many of the images I had imported I
had originally scanned
at 1200 dpi. The actual file size by the time I was done was about 130 MB.
So I've been
using Adobe Photoshop to reduce the resolution to 150 (the recommendation
was 96-150), and
so far I have reduced the file size to just under 58 MB. And I have
another 8 to go, plus the two
complex ones.

To answer your question about transitions: I was using only
"Immediate",
for both the slides and
the embedded objects. The objects generall consisted of enlargements of
portions of the
images, sometimes with lines showing what parts were enlarged. Perhaps I
was too ambitious.
Time will tell. I may need to resort to words again!!! I haven't tried
resampling yet, am waiting
to see what the results will be. And yes, I do save versions. My HD is
rapidly filling, but whose
counting Gigs right now!!!

Thanks for the advice.

I'll report back after I'm done.

Bill
