| Going Nuts Putting Pictures Into Frames |

I'm trying to make a photo album of sorts.
I made a landscape page containing 4 frames. The frame size is 4.75 x 3.22
inches for a 3:2 aspect ratio.
My images are mostly1600 x 1200, some smaller, but all are 3:2 aspect ratio.
When I place an image into a frame and select "fit to frame" it's
anybody's
guess if only part of the image shows up in the frame or if the image shows
up too small.
In any event, I have to dicker with every image to get it to fill the frame.
There must be something I have forgotten to do.
How does one set up one's chapter and size the frames so an image will
simply "plop" into it with 0 horizontal and 0 vertical offset and so I
don't
have to fiddle with resizing the image? Is there some other setting I am
overlooking? Maybe in how I set up the original frame? Like a default
setting or something???

Set up your frame (or a frame tag) Properties on the Content tab to Fit picture
to frame and Maintain aspect ratio. Make sure your the horizontal and vertical
shifts are zeroed. And make sure your inside margins are zeroed.
That should do it.
One caveat -- make sure the picture resolution is not greater than 1200 dpi. As
Gabor often points out, this is a somewhat meaningless setting -- you can make a
bitmap twice as large with half the resolution and it will be identical.
However, Ventura chokes on anything with a resolution set greater than 1200 dpi,
so there is at least one practical implication.

Well that's what I thought, but...
Some images come in at 3 inches wide and centered inside the frame such that
there is a significant white space around them. When I "Reset" the
size,
they are too big (16 or so inches) so I have to resize in that case as well.
Maybe this question is the right one:
What would the pixel dimensions be for an image to fill a frame that is 4.75
wide x 3.22 high? The file will be printed at desktop printer resolution.
They all start at 1600 x 1200 from my camera, BTW

Clayton --
I'm assuming these are JPGs, and that the camera is saving them at 72 dpi (all
pretty standard stuff). And at the size you are using them, they are printing
between 300 and 400 dpi -- which should be fine for a desktop printer. If the
resolution of your printer is 1200 dpi, you could get away with 150 dpi.
When you reset the picture size, it should be about as big as you describe
because at 72 dpi, 1600 x 1200 is 22.22" x 16.67".
Not sure what else to tell you other than it seems like something funky is going
on based on what you're describing. I did some testing here with some digital
pix from my camera and all seems good.
Do you get the same behavior in a brand new VP based on default.vp?

You have been given some excellent pointers by Eric and Gabor, and perhaps
your issues will be solved by one of their suggestions. There is another
piece of information about image size that may help you out a little, and
may explain why you are getting such different results when placing
pictures.
As has been mentioned, the resolution settings from your camera are likely
to be 72 ppi, so when you "reset" the size, you get 1600/72 x 1200/72
or
22.22" x 16.66". If you do as Gabor suggested and reset the image
resolution in an editor to 300 ppi, the image size is then 1600/300 x
1200/300 or 5.33" x 4", which is still larger than your current frame
size.
If you must use the 4.75" x 3.22" frame size then you'll have to set
the
image resolution to either 1600/4.75 (336.84 ppi) or 1200/3.22 (372.67
ppi) and let the other dimension fall where it may unless you want to
distort the image. As you can see, something has to give, and the easiest
may be the frame size.
Hope this helps,
Neil
