I went through the FAQ and this is the closest thing I could find -- not exactly
talking about your problem, but close enough that it may help:

-------------------------------------------
If you get a Spell Checker Initialization Error or "Failed to Initialize
Spell Assist," first reinstall, making sure you include English US as one
of the languages that you install. If that doesn't help, try this:

1. Search all drives for *.UWL. Delete any that are located in a folder called
Corel User Files"

2. From Windows, open a DOS window.

3. Type: cd\corel\graphics8\programs
and hit Enter

[Note: if you did not install to the default directory, then you'll need to
switch to the equivalent place where you installed. You must be in the Programs
directory for the app you are having problems with -- in this case, you can tell
for sure if the directory contains the program executable, for example,
VENTURA.EXE.]

4. At this point, your MS-DOS prompt should read
"C:\Corel\Graphics8\Programs>" (or equivalent)

5. Type: comreg -x
and hit Enter. You should get no message.

6. Type: comreg
and hit Enter. Again you should get no message.

If these things do not work, try uninstalling V8 and reinstalling to the default
folder.

VP8 Type Assist crash

Hello,

does anybody remember the workaround for the VP 8 Type Assist crash?
After a reinstallation I'd need to turn off that stupid capitalization
after a period (which is not always the end of a sentence, bother) but
Ventura crashes immediately. I know there was a workaround but it was
so long ago that I can't remember for the life of me...

Bye,
  Gabor

I don't remember a workaround for this ever being posted. I suffer from the
problem and have looked for a solution without success. I only have the
problem running V8 on winXP. I still have a copy running on win98 and it
does not experience the crash. Seems to be a problem only with the
combination of V8 and XP.

Here's what I put into the FAQ based on Gabor's response on Bob's list:

On some systems, trying to edit Type Assist options in V8 will cause a crash.
Here's how to get around it:

1. Delete C:\Program Files\Corel\Ventura 10\Custom\ventura.tpa (or at least move
it or rename it).

2. Start Ventura and open a publication.

3. Go to Tools|Type Assist. Everything will be turned off and the replacement
text list will be empty.

4. Enable 'Replace text while typing' and press OK, without adding any actual
replacement text. This will make Ventura recreate the file above with no
contents.

5. Now you can go back into Tools|Type Assist and modify it as you like (e.g.,
switching 'Replace text while typing' off altogether).

One other thought: Does it help at all if you set the compatibility for
Ventura.exe to Win98?
