Bold and Italic Missing

Bold and Italic Missing
Thu, 6 Mar 2008 21:36:59 -0500
I am trying to set up something in Century font. I have the font installed
on my system, but when I try to bold or italicize, nothing happens. In Word,
Word Perfect, etc. bold and italics are there. Am I doing something wrong,
or is Ventura stubborn and doesn't synthesize these effects? Thanks.

Tom,

I'll guess that the Century font you installed was just the "Normal"
font file, not the additional bold and italic font files. I suggest this
may be the problem because unlike word processing programs, Ventura does
not generate bold or italic artificially --- in other words the word
processors can produce an italic or bold version of a font when only a
"normal" font file is installed (synthesizes them as you put it), but

Ventura does not synthesize fonts and requires that the Century Bold and
Century Italic also be installed. Just a guess...

I second Daniel's opinion!

If you really have no bold or italic version installed, then Ventura
won't synthesize them. No sane DTP program would do it. Quark is the
only exception but then again, who would call it sane? :-))) Faking
bold and italic fonts is absolutely frowned upon by good typography
(fake bold is only ugly while italic is theoretically impossible
because italic is not a mathematical transformation; when you slant a
typeface mathematically, you get oblique, not italic and this is only
acceptable with a very few sans serif fonts). Fortunately, there is no
need for that, you'll find Century on your VP CD with the proper
variants all right.
