If I understand what you're wanting, you just have edit the Index
parameters to exclude the page number for that level.

Neil:
Thanks for your reply. Ventura always makes me look stupid, espicially when
I try to make it perform like I think it should, or as I think I would have
programmed it. I discovered today, after I posted the messages, that if you
create a new index entry with two levels, level one doesn't have a page
number.
Also, if you create a new index entry with three levels, levels one and two
don't have page numbers, etc. Pretty nice stuff. Also, by working in copy
editor view, you can get rid of level-one page numbers if you created those
by mistake when you only wanted the level-two entries to have page numbers.
I also discovered that it works pretty good to split the screen, body text
in one half-screen in copy-editor view, in the other half-screen the index
in page-layout view, and have the navigator open. Between these three items
it seems much easier to build a good looking index. I am finding that
building an index is a pretty tedious job.
Once again, the problem was with me, not Ventura.
Thanks again for your interest.

First rule of building an index: make friends with the right mouse button.
I think I have instructions on how to keep the headings consistent. If
you want to drop me an email (remove the apparent hostility from my
email address in the header) I will look through my 5 year old files and
pop it to you if you wish. Takes a huge amount of work out of it, AND
makes it accurate at the same time for all levels (for instance
"Officer" is not the same as "officer" or
"OFFICER", etc. Also males it
much easier and consistent when referring to someone who started out as
Private John Lee and finally became General Lee 10 years later. You let
the text do much of the work for you by using the RMB menus
appropriately. Doing anything else is asking for trouble--BIG trouble.

Joe,
Glad to help. Ventura is a very robust application, and as one who has
used it since about 1985, I am still learning things about its
capabilities. So, it isn't a matter of "looking stupid"... it's just
that
the task of mastering it is non-trivial, as they say.
It still sounds to me as though you're making your task of structuring
index entries harder than it needs to be. A couple of pointers:
1) Tags are your friend. The formatting of index levels and entries are
completely under the control of the tag settings.
2) The structure of the index entries are handled by the publications'
Index control. Learn that area well, and life is good.
Best,
Neil
