Eric,

When you say "Thou shalt not install two versions of the same font"
what
determines what is the "same" font? File names for the TT and T1
symbol
fonts have different file extensions. The icons, at least in Power Desk,
are different. Are we concerned about the "root" filename [not the
right
term, but my coffee's cold]?

Curious

John --

Sounds like two fonts of the same name installed -- which is easy to do with
Symbol. Here's more info from the FAQ (which talks about a different symptom
that may be caused by the same problem):

--------------------------------------------------
In V10, the print engine is device independent, which results in some new issues
that weren't present in V8. One of these problems is the infamous Symbol/Courier
failure to appear in the font list (which also occurs in Draw 9/10/11). The
problem is caused by the system Symbol and Courier fonts.

As we all know, one of the ten commandments is "Thou shalt not install two
versions of the same font." But these system fonts create exactly this
situation when you try to install T1 or TT Symbol/Courier.

So here's how you cure the problem:

1. Use Font Navigator (or ATM) to uninstall any Symbol and Courier T1 fonts.

2. Open the Fonts folder from the Control Panel and remove Symbol and Courier.

3. Open the Fonts folder (usually in your WINDOWS or WINNT folder) and delete
the following files (or move them to another location):

 cour.ttf
 courbd.ttf
 courbi.ttf
 couri.ttf
 coure.fon (hidden file)
 courf.fon (hidden file)
 symbol.ttf
 symbolb.ttf
 symbolbi.ttf
 symbole.fon (hidden file)

4. Reboot.

5. Reinstall T1 Symbol and Courier (or TT Symbol and Courier, but not both).

[Note: in isolated cases, you may also have to remove registry references to
these fonts at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\FontMapper.]

A couple more things to keep in mind. First, many applications will install TT
Courier and/or TT Symbol (as well as other fonts) when the application is
installed or updated. Microsoft applications are particularly onerous in this
respect. So if you plan to use T1 fonts, you'll need to be vigilant after
installing/updating applications to make sure you remove any TT versions of
those fonts that the application installs. [Alternatively, find a utility to
rename T1 fonts and rename the Symbol T1 font so it won't cause a conflict.]
Second, .FON files will probably be reinstalled anytim
e the video driver is changed or updated, so keep an eye on that, too!

If you use MS Office, here's a little tip from Peter Bennett to prevent TT
Symbol from reinstalling. First, go into Control Panel|Add Remove Programs.
Then, Change your MS Office installation, and tell it you want to add/remove
components. When the components list appears, mark the following entry
unavailable:

MSO 2000: Office Tools|International Support|Universal Font
MSO XP: Office Shared Features|International Support|Universal Font

This should prevent it from reinstalling TT Symbol.

font spacing problem
Wed, 2 Apr 2008 12:10:54 -0400
I have a need to intersperse characters from the Symbol font (I have PS) in
my text. For some reason, the spaceing tends to be messed up. The usual
problem is that the following non-symbol character is too close. Sometimes
it overlaps the symbol character. I put in thin spaces, but this is less
than ideal.

What is the cause of this problem? Would I be better off switching to a TT
font? If so, is there an easy way to globally change all instances of PS
Symbol to TT Symbol in an entire document?

Thanks for the help.

The font name. The filename doesn't matter -- it's the font name within the file
(i.e., the one that displays in the drop-down font list in Ventura, Word, etc.)
Even (especially?) if the fonts are a different format (e.g., TT and T1), if
they have the same name, then problems can occur.

Did that make sense?
