| Corel Ventura 5 vs. Corel Ventura 8 |

Hello eveyone.
I have versions of Corel Draw 4 and Ventura 4.2 which ran fine under Windows
95. I have a new computer running Windows XP and after installing both, I
can't get Ventura 4.2 to open and Corel Draw 4 opens, but doesn't work
properly. I want to upgrade to newer versions which I hope will work with
XP. Does Corel Draw 5/ Ventura 5 work okay with XP or should I get Ventura
8? I can get Version 5 for half the price of Ventura 8 and this would be
fine for my needs, but I'll go to the higher priced Ventura 8, if this would
be the better choice. Also, does Corel still support version 5? I would
surely appreciate any feedback anyone can give. Thanks in advance for any
help.
Sincerely,
Kevin Kierer

YOu wuold be prudent to upgrade to Ventura 10 rather than 8 for all the
reasons Allan Shearer mentions plus this:
Ventura 10 is actually fun to use (and more stable than 8). It really
was a substantial improvement over version 8 despite a few bugs that
bother some of the folks on this newsgroup (quite understandably). But
overall, Ventura 10 is simply a pleasure to use and a great tool to
enhance productivity. It is well worth the price.

No, Corel no longer supports version 5 ... and I seem to recall that official
support for version 8 is no longer available
either. SO, if it's a question of 'which is supported', that'll be a mute point
for you.
FYI - version 8 is not the most recent: version 10 is. And, version 10 is the
only officially supported version (by Corel) for
Windows XP.
That said, version 8 works perfectly well on WinXP - the same cannot be said for
version 5. There are many reasons NOT to go
with 5 and to move to 8 - or better yet, 10.
If it's a matter of cost, go with version 8 if you can actually find a
legitimate copy for sale. Else . . . I'd recommend you
buy version 10.
Hope this helps.
Allan
P.S. I've recently become a VAR with Corel (focusing on Ventura), so if you'd
like me to find you a good price on Ventura 10,
give me a shout.

Ventura 5 doesn't work okay with any operating system. Starting with Ventura
7, the code was rewritten from the ground up. Ventura 8 fixed some of the
worst bugs in Ventura 7. I'd go with Ventura 8 or 10.
That said, at one time I had Ventura 4.2 running under Windows 2000, and I
know someone else who is running it now on Windows XP. There's something in
the FAQ about it: http://www.draw.nu/venturafaq/.
