Corel Ventura 8 vs. 10

Corel Ventura 8 vs. 10
Fri, 12 Jan 2007 15:32:53 -080
Thank you all so much for your responses to my previous query. I really
appreciate it. I will forget about Corel version 5, but I see version 8 on
e-bay (new in box and unregistered) for about $150. I'm not considerably
worried that it is no longer supported by Corel, as long as it will actually
work on XP, I'd be happy. I only want to be able to use the old files that I
created with Ventura 4.2 on my new WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION operating system.
Of course, I would love to upgrade to the latest version 10, but the
cheapest price I see is going around $400. I use Ventura to print out nicely
formatted documents of all kinds of database files I've created in the past
and I'm not publishing books or anything that complicated, so I'm a little
hesitant to spend the big bucks if I can get by with version 8. Would I
still be better off waiting till I can afford version 10, or could I slide
by with 8? Your thoughts on this matter would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin Kierer

Allan,

Thank you so much for your help. Your advice makes perfect sense. I will
folow it. The version 8 on e-bay has the "Buy it Now" option and is
actually
from an e-bay store with a 30 day return policy if it is unsatisfactory in
any way. So, I think I can't go wrong. Again, thank you very much.

Much Appreciated,

Kevin Kierer

Hi Kevin

If it were me, and if I was sure that what was on eBay was legit (and I'm sure
it is - Ventura isn't exactly prone to piracy,
so, there's a good chance you need not worry at all) .... I would buy v8, at
that price. And here's why:

  - you will eventually buy v10 too, one day, I'm sure ... and you'll be able to
buy it at the Upgrade cost. So, in the end,
you'll get the two packages for the price of one (since you're getting such a
good price on v8).

  - v8 comes with a VERY powerful component that v10 does NOT! ... the Corel
Script Editor. THAT ALONE is worth buying this
version, if only for that alone.

So ... BUY v8, don't delay. And then ... one day, plan to buy v10 too at the
upgrade price . . . and you'll be glad you did.

I have both v8 and v10 installed on every computer I work on, MAINLY, just for
the Script Editor alone! I haven't used v8 for
any production work, myself, in years. BUT ... I do know a fella in Australia
who HAS to use v8 due to a rather unfortunate,
and little known/noticed bng (flip that middle letter) where Kerned Pairs simply
FAIL when found inside a Table Cell. This,
Corel has been made aware of ... and to date, I've heard NO ONE ELSE who has
noticed this bng ... so, obviously, it's gone
unnoticed for years, but, it's really there.

IMHO, that's v10's only serious flaw.

Anyhow . . . that's my opinion - I'd use the 'Buy it Now' option, if available.

Hope this helps.

Allan

ok, TWO of us. ;)

I'm sure others have noticed too - but not much has been said about it.
Frankly, it's a big bng, but, we just have to WAIT for
it to be fixed - and of course, in a pinch, use v8 if we HAVE to - as my friend
in Australia has discovered! :)
