Not sure (can't remember) if Acrobat version 4 has this option, but ... what I'd
TRY to do is:
- take the PDF into Acrobat. Now, REPRINT it to a postscript printing
(creating a PRN, etc...) *AND* see if you have the
options in the Acrobat Print Settings to print as Greyscale (or, All Colours to
Greyscale, etc...).
Then, re-distill this file and see if it's suitable for your printer.

Could be, then, that this was something they offered in later versions of
Acrobat.
When it comes down to it - has anyone considered the time_lost (expense) vs.
cost of upgrading to a newer version of Acrobat?
I'm using version 6, and am very happy with it. Haven't used version 4 in a few
years now.
I realize you may not be in a position to buy the upgrade, however, if this job
is for a client and they're dealing with such
very old files (PRN files from Ventura 3, Gem!), then they ought to consider
that this is going to cost them some $$, and part
of that expense is necessary upgrades to gain the features/functionality needed
to get the job done.
To SEE if Acrobat 6 CAN do this for you, send me a small (e.g., less than 1MB,
please) PRN file and I'll see if I can re-print
it with Greyscale ONLY info.

I have some PS level 1 files from VP GEM 3; these are just black text
and lines. I thought they were defined as CMYK, but can't tell for
sure.
(The colour selection is CMYK, but in the PS file I see things like
"setrgbcolor", so it may actually be using RGB.)
I distill this with Distiller 4 and send to prepress, as I have
similar files for years without incident, but a new client says his

In Distiller 4, the color job options are just "leave unchanged".
Can the "convert for color management" settings be used to force CMYK
output, if so exactly how? Does someone have a .joboptions file I can
use?
Any other hack to force the colours to CMYK (or just K)?
Upgrading Acrobat or Ventura to a higher version of isn't really an
option.

I can't find any options to print to greyscale in Acrobat; or any
colour options at all.

I'm working on a fixed fee, so it'd come out of my pocket.

Thanks, but I can ask someone local. If it is a standard feature in
current versions, then the printers should be able to do it
themselves.
Reminds me of the old days when I had to walk output houses through
how to download a Postscript file to their RIP. Most of the operators
wanted to "open" everything in either QXP or PhotoShop on their Macs.
