So that some of us can get that warm feeling of knowing that we were
just about to post the right answer?!?

This is driving me nuts. I've changed all my tags and they still don't
balance. Here's the situation:
I've got a chapter title, subtitle and one more line that are centred
across both columns. After that mostly Body Text with a Double Indent
along the way.
On the first page, there's one more line in the right column than in the
left. On the second page, there's one more on the left than on the
right. On the third page, they match. On the fourth, the chapter ends,
looking as though column balance isn't even turned on. That page has a
footnote frame that crosses both columns.
Extra info: I have 3 page tag pairs. The chapter before it is also 4
pages (2 have footnotes) with similar top material but it _does_
balance. It uses a different page tag (but the one in the problem
chapter was copied from it, which in turn was copied from the default).
Is this a bug? I'm stymied. :/

Why do we find the problem as soon as the post is sent? :P Yes, widows
and orphans -- what else? -- has been making uneven columns. Now it's
just the last page being wrong.
The succeeding chapter (WITH the right settings) has 2 lines on the last
page. Both in the same column. :/

Malcolm --
I know quite a bit about these two functions since I spent a lot of
time beta testing them.
Column balance is a bit finicky (b*g) -- when it works, it works pretty
well, when it doesn't it fails incomprehensibly.
VJ is about the same.
Both work pretty well on their own, but when you use them together, the
successes and failures just become more, ahem, spectacular.
As long as you understand this, there are plenty of workarounds (like
using frames to force column balancing) to get things where you want.
My advice is to recognize that both are touchy and rather than spending
time trying to make them work the way they should, just use a
workaround to get your text where you want it.

That must be it. :) But I still have uneven last pages, lo these 5 days
later and after much fiddling about.
Is it a bug? Is there a fix?
