I will add my two cents that character tags work in V10. The only
glitch we have found is that when you have more than one character tag
instance in a paragraph and the paragraph breaks across a page or
column boundary, the formatting sometimes drops off after the boundary.
But if you are aware of this, it's pretty easy to proof for.

I never found character tags to be reliable in V8. They do appear to
work in V10, however, so if that's an option I'd go that route. If V10
causes you more problems than it relieves with functional character
tags, I'd have to suggest using local formatting markup instead of
character tags in V8. It should be relatively easy to set up S&R macros
to handle the conversion.

If you might need to change the formatting later on, you could consider
using hidden text as "character tag" begin and end codes, and a
scripted
solution to update the formatting. Not sure how easy that would be to
implement, though--depends on a number of factors.

"Reliable as possible" is a bit of an oxymoron. ;-) In my experience,

even relatively simple use of character tags in V8 resulted in erratic
formatting results--far too erratic to make their use worthwhile for me.
I created a footnote method based on markers and xrefs, which uses
chartags to format the footnote references in superscript. More than a
few on a page resulted in very odd behavior (such as the closing tag not
turning off the specified formatting). The method works perfectly in
V10, however--I've done 3 footnote-heavy academic mss. with it, with
great success.

If you have only V8, test your text very carefully before you commit to
character tags. It's one of the features that falls into the category
"very broken".

Character tags

I know that character tags won't work if they're nested in CV8. However,
with all character formatting removed (or at least no character/format
tags showing in the Copy Editor View), some text still won't accept a
character tag.

Is there any way to fix this behaviour so that character tags are
applied reliably? (I'm setting a dictionary, and am importing pre-tagged
RTF files.)

TIA

Unfortunately, we only have CV8, so any tips on making character tags as
reliable as poss would be appreciated...

I may simply fully tag the text and import it into CV8 as a plain text
file rather than as RTF, which is what I usually do.
