Moving DPMDB to another volume ON THE SAME DPM BOX

Moving DPMDB to another volume ON THE SAME DPM BOX
Thu, 10 Apr 2008 06:06:03 -070
Please tell me I don't have to re-install DPM to do this!

We've come to realize that we put the DB on a volume that is just too busy.
I want to create another mirror on the DPM server with some new drives and
move the database there.

I was hoping I could shut down the DPM services, detach the database in mgmt
studio and then move / reattach it the way we do with other SQL dbs.

Would this work, or is this a more complicated process?

Thanks,

Hi Steve,
This is not a recommended process and DPM is not designed to handle such
migrations. We have configuration information stored in Windows Registry
regarding the location of DPMDB among various other info. So, we do not
recommend migrating DPMDB

As a work-around, I will recommend the following...
- Take a backup of existing DPMDB
- Uninstall DPM and choose to retain the disk-based replicas. Reinstall DPM
(Choose appropriate location for DB files during DPMSetup)
- Use DPMSync.exe to restore backed-up DPMDB

You can refer to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb808877.aspx
and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb808944.aspx for details on
the usage of DPMSync
