| Space requirement question when backing up D-D-T |
 |
Thu, 10 Apr 2008 13:31:01 -070 |
We have the Dpm1-Dpm2 solution in place right now and we are looking at using
Firestreamer to back up DPM2. The questions are...
1. when the "tape" back up runs against DPM2...does it back up entire
database or a snap shot of the current PG? (current = if I was to restore
the PG at the time of tape back up)
2. how to tell how much space will be required for the "tape" back
up?
reasons for this is DPM1 is set to hold 2 weeks of PS backups and DPM2 is

Thank you for your reply.
So I am a little confused on this one...it doesnt back up the PG? Please
define what the datasource level is and that should answer it all.
Also, you say to look in the Recovery Console and see the size there...so
just add up all the things that are portected in the PG on a given day and
that should equal the amont of space needed?

Thank you again for the quick reply and that makes sense. But that brings up
2 more questions dealing with this..
1. the tape back up will only back up say the Exchange database as it is at
that moment in time and not the 6 months of on disk retention I
have...correct?
2. since I have been DPM1-DPM2 for now...can I just modify the PG on DPM2 to
send to "tape" or do I need start a new PG on DPM2?

HI Ebrola
1. When the tape backup runs against DPM2, it does not backup entire DPM2 or
protection group. It can only backup at datasource level. You can choose
which datasource to be protected to Tape while configuring tape intents
2. It depends on the size of the recovery point for the datasource. This
information will be available on the RecoveryUI

By datasource, I mean volumes, SQL databases, Storage groups etc. You can
pick and choose datasources that needs to be secondary protected.
Regarding the space needed...Yes, you are right. Actually, DPM itself can
estimate the space needed when you configure disk based protection.
