Dual Processor Recommended?

Dual Processor Recommended?
Sat, 12 Apr 2008 16:57:00 -070
Hi,
We are about to build 2 DPM servers. Each server will be protecting 12 -15
file servers accross WAN links on an hourly synchronization schedule. Most
will have nightly recovery points. The current server we are looking at
starts with 1 quad core E5430 2.66 Ghz Xeon processor. The server is dual
processor capable. The obvious thing to do would be to start with one
processor and get the second if needed. The trouble is we are a public school
division, in general it is much easier to get the money up front than to try
and go back later and say we need money for upgrades.

I don't mind spending the money on the second processor if it is truly
needed. I just don't want to spend the extra money and then find that we
would have been absolutely fine with a single quad core processor. Any
assistance is greatly appreciated, thanks to all for thier help so far.

Thanks Mukul, I have read the system requirements. It reads "2.33 GHz
quad-core CPUs" This is why I ask the question... does "CPUs"
mean the
recommendation is 2 quad core CPU's. Also, experience has shown me that the
"Recommended System Requirements" are not always ideal. I'm hoping
that some
other readers will share what real world cpu loads they are seeing.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Lyle,

Please go through these hardware requirements.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb808861.aspx

This is all what DPM needs anything above this would good for faster
processing and large storing.

Please feel free to ask me if you require more information.

I run my DPM server on a Dell PE1950 with one 2.83GHz Quad-Core CPU. I
protect 12 remote servers and don't see any apparent performance issues.
(although I don't have any measurements to back that up :) )

I did alot of testing and trials before we went "live". So I created
and
recreated PGs all the time. During testing I never got the feeling that any
performance issues were related to the processing power, but more to the disk
or network systems, if any.

Thanks for the input Derrick. I'm thinking now that we will also be okay with
1 Quad Core CPU. As a matter a fact there is a deal on the 2.83 Ghz one at
the moment.
