D2007 to studio 2007 upgrade problem

D2007 to studio 2007 upgrade problem

It's really crap to have the close button disabled on the installer --
especially before it's really done anything. That is unacceptable and
really angers me. I can see doing it once un-reversible changes start
happening, but to disable close before the "start install" begins is
unreasonable. I had to reset my machine when the install screen opened
and sat there doing nothing to the dvd or my hard drive for more than
ten minutes.

I have xp-pro with 2 gig of ram, d2007 installed with update 3. That
was a problem since I started the update on dialup and discovered it
was going to take me till the next century before I could work again. I
ended up downloading the entire file at a business associate's office
and updated from there. I only lost 6 hours of work on this.

Because of the new help update, I decided I had better install the
studio upgrade before I got the help update. This time I spent an hour
making backups of my c drive and my work drive before starting to
install the studio update I received by mail.

Anyway, I started to install and got to the point where I selected
"upgrade" from the menu and it took a while then said it couldn't
find
update 3 files and was asking me to determine where to save them. The
install help file on the cd said that running setup upgrade from the
command line would only install d2007 for win32 update 3. Well I
already have that installed and working. Rather than have it try to
download 700 megs again by dialup, I called support (they're busy and
haven't gotten back to me yet) and finally cancelled the install. Then
I decided to try again with just "install" instead of update but it
just hung on the first window with the close button greyed out. I
finally had to hard shutdown my machine to get rid of it.

What the hell do I have to do to upgrade to studio? Do I need to backup
the codegear registry settings, then uninstall, then do a complete
re-install, then restore the registry settings?

No, the safer way is :

1) Rename your BPL folder (where all your bpl reside).
2) Export your known packages , known experts, etc you know are changed
in the registry. Leave alone the other stuff of Codegear itself.
3) Uninstall that thing (if not allow you, use Microsoft uninstaller tool).
4) delete registry at BDS/5.0 everywhere you fin that
5) if you dont have another borland codegear tool delete all you find
related to borland/codegear in registry and hard disk.
6) reinit OS.
7) install update 3.
8) when it says installing help, just go to task process and kill
helpsetup.exe
9) the install will end cleanly.
10) try to start d2007 update 3.
11) register etc, and enjoy it work.
12) out d2007 update 3
13) go to the path where you save your install files (the one holding
*.7zip)
14) rigth click over help system installer.7zip, and select extract here
15) go to the folder created find help_setup.exe and run, it will
download all the help stuff and install it cleanly.
16) now copy all your bpl to the new bp folder in your documents rad
studio\5.0\bpl
17) import the old registry settting.

start d2007, it must run fine. If some package complain just open it and
rebuild. it that dont work try to install, if still dont work , just
remove it, restart d2007 and reinstall the package.

Sorry if i forget some step please somebody else point that

BTW, is a shame the actual installer STILL have troubles with the help
installer, STILL keep waiting the form for select the language. Why the
heck dont get the language selected for the D2007 installer??? Anyway,
Codegear dont will fix, as i see.

Enjoy!

Why are you suggesting to kill the Help install in step 8? What
problems are you seeing with the Help install? Basically, step 8 and
step 15 should be very similar.

Can you run by hand the help setup? Do you see the first step is ASK to
SELECT the language? FINE! That's the same thing actually does the help
install when run under the wing of general setup. Remains WAITING for a
user input (select the language) BUT is never displayer. Wich happens
when a form wait for a user response but is not displayed? How many time
can take to that form continue as expected? Forever?
