Soapbox inherits YouTube worries

Soapbox inherits YouTube worries

There's an article on the WSJ site this morning saying that the copyrighted
material that was removed from YouTube is now showing up on MSN Soapbox, which
just opened up for public beta last week.

Here's a clip:

"The presence of the pirated clips on a site owned by Microsoft, the
world's largest software company, suggests to some industry watchers that the
idea of keeping pirated video off the Web is so far a forlorn hope.

"No one has really solved the problem," said Gregory Rutchik, an
infringement litigator with the Arts & Technology Law Group, based in San
Francisco."

The article talks about the challenge of needing to make uploading videos a
"snap" (to attract users) while respecting copyright issues...

I wonder what the answer ultimately will be regarding the whole file
sharing-vs-copyright issue. It's a natural thing to want to share something good
with others. But it's also important that we find a reasonable way to do this
that doesn't short-change the people who created the content. Is there a way to
share clips, songs, and more with friends while still ensuring artists get their
due?

IMO, clearly technologies growing rapidly than these copyright/law, its very
hard for anyone to address these problems before starting business on it,
especially in ‘social software’. Soapbox/ YouTube really encouraging users
to violate copyright.

The content publishers (Soap/YouTube etc) want to promote their products for
social networking purposes, for file sharing, etc, since they are in the
business to make that happen. The content providers want to protect the
copyright, this is where the problem starts, they have to find out their own
with little support from publishers, have to request publishers to remove the
content (DMCA), I wouldn’t agree with it, especially people who create content
purely for commercial purpose, DMCA really allows publishers to dominate content
providers (especially media companies) who invested lots of money on creating
such stuff.

I don’t think we can find permanent solution, but it can be in controllable to
certain extent, could continue to decrease by refining technologies (ex: real
time detection), modifying laws, increasing user awareness, publishers could
encourage users to participate to find misuse of copyrighted materials.

Sometimes the copyright police get out of control. I uploaded a 60 second video
clip of a promotional commercial a local TV station did (CTV) and the damn thing
got taken off YouTube within two days with a DCMA complaint! Video sharing isn't
FUN if you can't do reasonable things with it...and I think a 60 clip of a
commercial is reasonble. Hell, it was free ADVERSTISING for this TV network!

Enterprise youtubes!

A new trend in social network, this site allows partners and employees of citrix
to upload video, I wish to see soapbox something similar to this model
(employees, users, partners, etc to host very controlled & quality contents)
instead of competing with ‘congested YouTube’

This is the clear example for how the copyright materials misused, copyright
issue is a life long battle especially for youtube!

Gmail users may loose domain name (@Gmail) in their Email address. They are also
coming to US to claim the domain.
