We have Student Encarta 2008. I would like to do a network install so admins
can install it on students PCs from the server in order to allow us to have
more control.
So far i have run the disk on the server and created 2 shares:
\\server\encarta1
\\server\encarta2
Encarta1 seems to install the .exe files.
I then go to a client machine and open \\server\encarta1 i run setup.exe and
it asks for an installation location (by default its set to c:\program
files\....) i change this to \\server\encarta2.
Once all is installed i get a successful message. I run all and they seem to
run fine with the exception of "Learning". When i open Learning, it
loads the
splash screen and a few seconds later it displays that it encounters a
problem and will shutdown.
So my question is have i installed this correctly? im also hoping the server
to do the updates so clients dont need to. If this is done incorrectly please
advise the correct procedure, or if this is correct what can i do with the
problem im experiencing with Student Learning as itll display part of the
opening screen before it crashes?
Server used is Windows Server 2003 - Client PC is Windows Vista (and XP with
same problem)

Hii,
Hmm.. there are 2-3 things I can suggest here..
1) When you are creating a dump ( Installation ) Do not create 2 diferent
olders like disk1 and disk2. Rather, create 1 single folder and copy both the
CD's/DVD's to the same folder.
Eg: Create 1 folder called Encarta and copy both the CD's to the same
folder. There can be few files which are present on both the CD's Hence, you
may replace them to proceed copying.
After the above step you should be able to do a administrative installation
on thue server first and then use your admin install to deploy Encarta on the
client systems.
Steps:
At the command prompt, use one of the following methods: • For encarta, type
msiexec /a X :\EncartaAdmin\zzz.msi , and then press ENTER.
Note: In this example, X is the CD drive letter Encarta is your shared
folder and zzz is the .msi file in the shared folder.
Follow the installation instructions. When you are prompted for the path of
the Administrative installation, type the path of the shared folder. The path
of the shared folder can be either the local path.
After you complete the installation, use another computer on the network,
and then locate the \\computer name\EncartaAdmin\share that you created. Then
use setup.exe from the this share.
2 ) After your done with the installation. Please check 1 desktop and the
server for registry keys wherein there should be a reg key which is related
to updates. As in it to show the path or web address for updates.
Now, DO NOT change anything on the server let it download updates from the
web. But for client systems please check the path/web address and change it
to the folder where server stores updates.
You will need to share the updates folder so that all the client systems can
access it.
Please do this on 1 system first and then deploy encarta, check the system
for updates and then on all the systems.
Now, about the splash that you have mentioned.. I would need more
information on this. Please check if the display drivers i needed update
them. Check diferent userprofile and also check in clean boot.
Lemme know how it goes.
