| Layout/ print formatting query |

Hello -
Someone else configured our FMP database, and i was trying to tweak
the width of a portal, and I somehow messed up the print formatting -
I am hoping someone might be able to help me!
There are two portals one above the other, the top with 12 lines and
the bottom with 30 lines, each with a created header row for each.
When i would seek out an entry and do the print/print preview layout,
what used to happen was that the portal would shrink to accomodate
only the rows that were used: all empty rows would disappear. The
same would happen with the bottom portal, and the bottom portal and
header row would "scootch" up on the page so that there was not extra
blank space.
While both portals still only show used lines, the second one no
longer scootches up. I though it might be grouping, anchoring, or
locking, but it appears this is not the case. In addition, the white
print on a black bar that used to be the heading no longer shows the
white print: the type is scootching up, but the black bar and portal
below is not. I tried grouping the objects, but I cannot get the bar
and portal to act in the same manner as the text.
I would be most grateful for any advise or nods in the right
direction.
Thank you in advance -

Kris,
My advice is to not use portals for printing. It's not what they're
good at. Portals are really good at displaying data, but not printing
it.
You should be basing the layout for the report from the table the
records in the portal are showing from, using summary parts for
headers.

Kris,
Hope you learned a couple of things: always make backups! either a copy of
the file or a copy of the layout. Don't try to interfere with something you
really don't understand. As Grip has already stated: portals are good for
some things, but not so good for printing/previewing. I would go back to the
original maker of the solution and ask to implement a proper preview/print
layout for the result of the portal. As to restoring to the old
functionality: since I'm not sure what you might have done breaking it, it
is not possible to say what will fix it.
Keep well, Ursus

I have to agree about not printing Portals, but unfortunately that
seems to be the way the original developer has set it up.
By the sound of it the Sliding has gone awry, possibly just for the
"black bar".
You could try going into Layout mode and selecting the "black bar"
AND
the titles on top of it, then Grouping them via the Arrange menu. Then
with the group still selected go to the Sliding option in the Format
menu and make sure that the option to Slide up is turned on, as well as
the option to "Also reduce the size of the enclosing part". Then
click
on the OK button.
