I have the latest version of Firefox, but it doesn't seem to be doing any
spellchecking as 'advertised' in the features section.. do I have to do
anything special to get spellchecking functionality? Have I missed a
tick-box somewhere?

1. The spell checker works on text you enter in multi-line forms.
Find yourself a web page with a multi-line text form field,
for example
http://babelfish.altavista.com/translate.dyn
2. Right-click on the multi-line text form field and ensure the
following right-click menu entries have been selected
• (right-click) -> Spell check this field
• (right-click) -> Languages -> English
3. Enter some text in the multi-line text form field.
Note how spelling errors are underlined in red.
4. Right-click on a red underlined word, and select
a corrected spelling from the top of the right-click menu.

You can also spell check single line fields by going to about:config,
and setting 'layout.spellcheckDefault' to '2', which will cause it to
check both single and multi-line fields.
