| Free repair for Xbox 360s made in 2005 |

DailyTech reports that all Xbox 360 users with systems manufactured before
January 1, 2006 are eligible to receive free repairs if they are having trouble
with their systems. What's more, users who have already paid for repairs will be
receiving checks in the mail in the next 5-8 weeks. Here's the link to the
article: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4263
And here's the official Microsoft word DailyTech added this morning: "As
part of our standard and ongoing process of analyzing repair data, we recently
noticed a higher than usual number of units coming in for repair. Upon further
investigation, it was further discovered that the bulk of the units were
isolated to a group that was part of the initial manufacturing run of the
console. Returns for repair are coming in for a variety reasons and it's a
higher rate than we are satisfied with. We've made the decision to comp repairs
for consoles manufactured before January 1, 2006, and provide refunds to the
small group of customers who have already paid for repairs."
So if you've got "the 3 red lights of death" on your 2005 Xbox 360,
get Xbox support on the phone. :)

No, it is an offer to repair certain units built before a certain date. Not
all units exhibit the behavior. If they do exhibit the covered behavior,
they'll be fixed.

ChrisH:No, it is an offer to repair certain units built before a certain date.
Not all units exhibit the behavior. If they do exhibit the covered behavior,
they'll be fixed....Fits my interpretation of a recall; albeit a recall for a
specific issue.
If not, there would have been a drill-down to specific serial numbers.
As I understand it, the boxes are being built by several contract manufacturers.
If that is true, then it must be a design fault, of any kind, since a
manufacturing error can definitely be traced to which contractor erred, limiting
the scope of the 'free repair offer'.
If my inference from this is correct, then there is only one linear, and logical
conclusion: recall.

It is not a "recall" since they're not asking for ALL units to be
returned
for a retrofit or whatever. They're saying IF an Xbox 360 built before the
date of January 1, 2006, has that type of failure, it will be repaired at no
cost (or refund for those already fixed) when/if the problem comes up.
Mine was built in October, 2005, but has no exhibited the problem mentioned.
Do I send it in as a recall? No, it doesn't have the problem, and doesn't
need the repair. It is not a recall.
