Nintendo to replace 3.2M Wii straps

The story on SeattlePi is that Nintendo is now going to replace 3.2 million Wii
remote straps to resolve the "flying controller" problem many have
reported. Here's a clip:

"Nintendo will allow customers to exchange the old straps, which have a
0.024 inch diameter, for a beefed up strap that has a diameter of 0.04 inch,
company spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said. The worldwide exchange is expected to
cost the company several million dollars.

"People tended to get a bit excited, especially while playing Wii sports,
and in some cases the control would come loose from their hands," Minagawa
said. "The new strap will be almost twice as thick."

It seems ironic to me that customers are happy with the Wii hardware and
software, but it's a little simple old-fashioned wrist strap that is the fly in
the ointment...

Hmm i'm not entirely sure increased thickness is an improvement but I guess that
it's cheaper than making it out of a better material. Still there ain't no way
I'm paying $400 for a party console.

I would think that the little plastic where the wrist strap is attached would
break as well.

I know with my previous Nokia cell phone, I had a wrist strap on, and the wrist
strap ripped off the plastic part which held the strap.

Time will tell what will happen.
