Driving games impact real driving skills, researchers say
Mon, 19 Mar 2007 18:45:40 +000
CNET is reporting this morning on a study released in Germany that claims that
racing games may be causing reckless driving--and higher accident rates among
game players. Here's a clip:

"Driving actions in these games often include competitive and reckless
driving, speeding and crashing into other cars or pedestrians, or performing
risky stunts with the vehicle," the researchers wrote. "In short, most
actions in racing games imply a very high risk of having an accident or severe
crash in a highly realistic virtual road traffic environment."

Let's do an informal survey...if you play driving games, do you notice any
impact on your real-world driving skills?

Can we discuss this after they remove the halo traction?

I was doing so well in 5th gear, but then I switched to R (for Racing).

Not really, I drive fairly hard either way (not crazy driving like taking
corners at too higher speed etc but more keeping gears low and accelerating
quickly). I haven't played many games (live for speed and GTR2 excluded) which
actually remotely simulate driving (I have a logitech g25 steering
wheel+pedals(with clutch)+shifter) If playing need for speed carbon made me
think I could drive down a mountain at 200km an hour I've probably got bigger
issues than what's waiting at the bottem....

On a side note I think i'll be selling my current car soon for something a bit
more comfortable (and still just as quick - if not quicker)

Just racing games?

Every popular game I've seen involves doing something faster until it fails
and you die. Then you start a new game and do it all over again. If the
games were realistic enough to affect real driving and shooting, we'd be out
of game players.

So if driving games make us drive more recklessly, I wonder how the FPS games
are to blame for some increase in violent crimes.

Just another blurb in the press that makes one go ..."hmmmm....."
