Send 1000 email - Running in background

Hello

 I need a little bit of direction here. 

What would I need to understand in order to create a page where I press a button
and it will start a background procedure to simply loop through a thousand
emails and send them to the smtp mail queue?

Everything is done except the background procedure. Not sure how to go about
doing that. I search the net, but what I found seemed to complicated for what I
am trying to do.
