| Span FTP folder over mutiple drives? |
 |

Is there anyway to have a folder in my FTP server span across mutiple hard
drives? Raid 0 is not a option due to the instability, and Raid 0 isnt due to
the fact that I will loose 50% of my space. The best raid alternatives Raid 5, 6
are extreemly expensive (hardware controllers are about $300). Any suggestions
guys?

If you want true redundancy you'll need to use up a good portion of your space.
Ideally you want hardware RAID, but you could potentially use the software RAID
built into Windows and have a RAID1 disk array.
If you have more than 2 drives, you can consider RAID5 which is more efficient,
but if you only have 2 drives, then using up 50% of your space is the only
option.

What is the purpose of spanning the folder? Space? Data redundnacy? Speed?
There are plenty of options, but FTP itself won't care. If you're looking to
ensure data availability, a good backup and a spare drive would be a relatively
decent option.

The point of this is space. And raid 5 was my original idea, except my drives
are all varying sizes (smallest si 40gb, alrgest is 200gb) so that wont work
well, and hardware elvel raid 5 controller si a bit pricy. Backup doesnt matter
to me, there are endless options for that.

if it just space you needed. I believe you can 'combine' the drives as dynamic
volume, or mount new drive as 'folder' of the main drive. Take note, this has no
redundancy or fault-tolerance feature at all.
