Indexing / contact sheet graphics software.

On Debian Etch I've been using srln to post, vi as editor and aish to
uuencode images. While seeking a means to make a contact / index sheet
for those wishing to pick and choose prior to transferring these large
photos, I've found that gm will make a contact sheet but omits filenames
under each picture. 

Using 'gm montage background black pen white path/to/images/*.jpg'
doesn't provide filename below each image on the index.

I've started messing about with Phatch, but it makes little pictures of
the original with a filename stamp yet no index sheets.

Anyone here know how I can process large numbers of images to make
several contact sheets which include a filename at each picture on the
index?
