Hi
I am building a new pc to run linux and I have been recommended an asus
board but it uses the ati cross fire gpu platform. I haven't really had
alot of success with ati cards but since they open up their device drivers
dwas wondering if they are better supported by the linux community. I'll
be running a dual linux system, fedora8 and gentoo. Eventually phasing out

I also have had better luck with the nVidia cards, but if you have a crossfire
board, and if you want to get advantage of it, the it will be ATi with the
binary drivers. At least in Gentoo it will be easy to install as it uses
portage, while on Fedora and most other distributions you will have to relay
on 3rd party packages or use the installer that can be downloaded from AMD.
The opensource driver is ok and it has hardware accelerated opengl, but it
don't support all the graphics cards as the binary driver. It's still not so
that the Linux community gets all the specs they need to develop a driver.

Well as you know, opions are like rearends... everyone has one 8-). BUT
having said that, I have had Linux experience with both. I like Nvidia
better. However my experiences are based on what I am doing. My laptop has
Nvidia, and my desktop has ATI. As for Cross Fire, I do not have any
experience there. I like the Nvidia due to the ease of getting my Ubuntu
7.10 distro to use it on my new Compaq/HP laptop. It recognized it right
off the bat... no fiddling. The card in my desktop is about 2 and a half
years old, can't remember its name now, but it was the best I could afford
at the time. To get SUSE or Ubuntu to use it, I had to use FWDwrpper (or

Thanks for the post. I thought as much with regards to ATI and nvidia
cards. I don't think that I'd ever use cross fire or sli so it's a no
brainer. One quick question maybe some one can answer for me. I like the
compiz-fusion effects on my desktop but miss being able to spread the
desktop across two screens.will either cross fire or sli allow me hook up
both screens. Or will a board that allows two graphic cards allow for
