Problems with LVM

Problems with LVM
Wed, 09 Nov 2005 23:01:27 GMT
Hi,

I am experimenting many problems with the LVM of eCS 1.2 Media Refresh.
When I use it in the setup process, this one notify me the partition table
in disk 0 is wrong, and then the LVM doesn't allow to do any change on it.
Of course my partition table is perfect and I can manage it without
problems from Windows (I use the Acronish Disk Suite), from Linux or even
from FreeDOS.

I have a 80Gb IDE HDD in a Compaq Presario M2000 AMD Turion 64 with some
operating systems installed like Windows XP Professional x64, SUSE 10.0
and FreeDOS. XP and DOS are in primary partitions and Linux in a logical
partition.

So the question is, what does happen with the LVM? Why from the operating
systems commented above I don't have any problem to manage the partitions
and from LVM it tells me the partition table from disk 0 is wrong and I
cannot continue the installation of eCS 1.2 Media Refresh because it
doesn't allow me to create a new partition for this one?

Perfect partition tables do not exist.
The rules about how to fill in certain fields are NOT standard
between operating systems and even different tools.
Most sensible fileds in this regard are the CHS ones ...

Sure, because they use the same 'standard' for CHS values ...

Most likely because it does not like your CHS assignments,
perhaps caused by eCS using a different disk geometry.

Either they use the same 'standard' or they don't care about CHS at all.

LVM, like pationMagic, is very picky about using the 'right' CHS values.
The problem is they can not be right for LVm and PartitionMagic at the same
time.
Acronis may use the same CHS rules as PartitionMagic, or perhaps as Microsoft.

There are at least 3 variants of using CHS.
Read up about in the documentation of my DFSee tool

	http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsterms.txt

Look for the 'CHS' and 'CHS dummy' explanations.

DFSee can show the current used standard for your partition tables,
and can convert from one standard to another if you want ...

Hi,

What are the differences between the standard edition and professional of
DFSee?

Technically, they are the same.

The professional registration gives a single person (YOU) the right
to use the program on ANY system you like. it is intended for
system administrators, data recovery specialists and other
technicians that need to use DFSee on client's systems
or may different systems in their company.

The normal registration only allows you to use
DFSee on your OWN systems for personal use.
(But it is OK to use the same copy on a desktop
and Laptop, as long as they are yours :-)

The license texts are available at the DFSee website:

	http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/pl-dfsee.htm
and
	http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/sl-dfsee.htm

I've just found bought eComStation 1.2R, and I'm having the same problem,
so I decided to get DFSee and check myself. However, DFSee reports CHM
values as being the correct, IBM type. What other things could cause the
"Disc 0 reports a corrupt partition table" ?
