| Converting volume to JFS? |
 |

I have a machine with one large JFS volume and a couple of smaller HPFS
volumes. I'd like to convert the HPFS volumes to JFS, but I'm not
entirely sure how to go about it.
If I select 'format' from the drive context menu, JFS is greyed out. Do
I have to delete the volume using LVM and recreate it, or is there a
better (safer?) way to do it?
Thanks...

Have you tried this from a command prompt? E.g. (if j: is the new volume
you want to format as jfs):
[C:\] format j: /fs:jfs
Do you already have other jfs volumes? If not, it might be a good idea
to check whether the jfs.ifs is in config.sys...

The standard JFS format utils want have JFS on an LVM type volume,
not an compatibility volume. You could use LVM/MiniLVM/LVMGui/..:
remove the HPFS volume+partition, create new LVM type volume,
and now format /fs:jfs or the PM variant of it should workd.

Yeah, I tried that. It errored out. I think because the original volume
was a compatablity volume.

I've got a large JFS volume on the machine, and I've just installed the
eCS beta on the machine, after formatting the install volume as JFS. So
the .ifs is loading...
The problem seems to have been the fact that HPFS only requires
compatability volumes and JFS won't install to them. I've just wiped
one of the HPFS volumes out and recreated it - its now formatting as
JFS...

Thanks Veit. That's pretty much what I ended up doing. I was a little
uncertain about what effect removing a volume would have, but I was
able to remove it, then recreate it and it is now formatting...
