formatting a USB drive
Sat, 16 Sep 2006 04:40:48 GMT
I have a USB external drive currently formatted FAT32 that I would like to
switch to JFS. In order to do so, I need to switch the partition from
compatibility to LVM type, but whatever I try seems in vain, the volume
stays in compatibility type. What's the trick? The drive appears as drive
K: in the drives folder.

Also, PMFORMAT seems not to be working: whether I try to start it from the
command line or by clicking on the executable in \os2, nothing happens.

I think you need to delete the Volume and then recreate the Volume. I'm
guessing from the "whatever I try" above that may not be working.

From a quick glance at the "USB Removables - Care and Feeding FAQs",

sections "LVM won't make any changes" and "Still no luck" it
looks like
the answer may be to use DFSee.

I suggest a good read of the above FAQ which can be found in INF format
packaged with the usb configuration tool
  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/usbcfgb7a.zip
or in the original html format here
  http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0606H/feature_2.html

That seems to be standard behaviour - I think PMFormat may need to be
started by RMB click on a drive to format to pass the drive letter
involved as a parameter. Obviously you would not want to format the
drive that you are currently booted from so starting by clicking the
executable will not work.

To use a command line to format a disk/disc would involve the Format
command rather than PMFormat.

Depending on which version of eCS you have there could be another
PMFormat problem to resolve...

You may find that you have the eCS version of PMFormat installed and the
system setup to use that not very helpful bit of software due to entries
in Path and LibPath.

I suggest that you delete the eCS PMFormat to avoid problems:-

  [BootDrive}:\ecs\bin\pmformat.exe or [BootDrive}:\ecs\install\pmformat.exe

  [BootDrive}:\ecs\dll\pmformat.dll or
[BootDrive}:\ecs\install\NLS\[language directory]\pmformat.dll

The locations varied on the 2 eCS1.2R systems I have here...

I have done the above deletions myself after finding that a RMB on a DVD
drive and selecting format brought up an error message from an
application calling itself PMFormat that informed me that "? drive
letter is too big".

I have no idea why eCS has included this hapless application as a
replacement for PMFormat but hope that someone at eCS is bright enough
to realise that and removes it from any future releases - or improves it
so that it is at least as capable as the IBM PMFormat.

Hope the above is of help/interest.
