The thing is, Director is the other program that was the foundation of
Macromedia. It has its own custom plug-in which brings its own installation
hazards. I wouldn't switch to a program that needs a plug-in other than the
Flash plug-in, and I'd be concerned that Adobe wouldn't have enough
commitment to Director and would stop developing it as well in the next
couple of years.

Director can do just about anything Authorware can, and much more. It's
always been an 'alternative'. Authorware was used primarily to create
training applications, so it has lot's of pre-built functionality for
