Hello,

I am not sure if MapPoint will be useful or not. Could you consider
the foll scenario and tell me ?

Scenario:

Consider a small area, i.e., say 1 square mile of area with lots of
buildings and roads inbetween. (Eg: a university or part of a city
downtown). I have individual statistics for each building / street in
that area (eg: say carbon emissions from each building or average
traffic in each street etc.) and these statistics are dynamic - i.e.,
say they change every week.

I want the area to be displayed as an interactive map, with push
pins / markers which if clicked (or zoomed or something) would show
the statistics in that building / location. And this needs to be
available online so that others can just go to a url, interact with
the map (scroll / zoom, etc) and get the statistics from any marked
location.

The important thing is that the statistics must be obtained
automatically (from a database) and the changes be reflected on the
map.

Would MapPoint or any other software be able to help me with this?

Actually, if I have a jpeg file as the map of my location - is there a
software that would simply allow me to place markers on jpeg file and
update the information available on the marker (when clicked) by
getting the data automatically from a database.

Thanks,

Thanks a lot. I guess the custom programming part is fine - as long as
the software allows for it.
Also, this might sound stupid, but how do I get to
news:microsoft.public.mappoint.net ?

MapPoint the desktop application (which is being discussed in this
group - MapPoint 2006 currently) is not a good match IMHO - for two
reasons:

- it does not show individual buildings, it shows streets

- it is not a web application.

The MapPoint web service or Virtual Earth (both discussed in
news:microsoft.public.mappoint.net) may be a better fit - both will
not do what you want "out of the box" though, they will require
custom
programming.

You may be able to find something that fits, but again, I doubt it
will match your specs exactly - after all, such a software would need
to be highly configurable as it ignores your database schema, what
data you want to display, and in which way you further want to
interact with that data.

Virtual earth is way to go. You can also use MapCruncher provided by virtual
earth team to add your own layer.
