MapPoint OLAP Wizard Add-in

MapPoint OLAP Wizard Add-in
Fri, 29 Feb 2008 07:30:03 -080
I have found a MapPoint OLAP Wizard add-in. This can then be used to create
a data map based on an OLAP query.

I have managed to get the add-in working with MapPoint 2006, but it appears
that this add-in will only work with SQL Server 2000. The wizard is looking
for ".cub" files.

Trouble is, I would like it to work with analysis services databases in SQL
Server 2005, and these have an extension of ".cube". So the add-in
will
never find my required cube files.

I do have a long-winded method to get round this. By creating a MDX query
against the OLAP cube, coping and pasting the results of the query into
Excel, and to import the Excel spreadsheet into MapPoint. I was hoping to
find a more automated method. So I was wondering if there is an updated
add-in that recognises SQL Server 2005? Or any other ideas?

Many Thanks

Richard

Thanks for replying Eric. I had a feeling there wouldn't be an updated wizard.

What I will try is to automate as much of my long-winded method as possible.
That is, get a script to run the MDX query and write the results to a text
file. Then (and I haven't got this far yet!) look at MapPoint to somehow
import the text file automatically.

I don't believe there is any updated version unfortunately.. I talked with the
person
at Microsoft who wrote that years ago and he seemed think it was a good idea to
release the source code so people could further develop it and work around
short-comings, but he would have had to clean up the code first and it didn't
sound like a priority... I'm not sure that person is with Microsoft anymore but
certainly is not in the MapPoint group..

Someone probably needs to re-write it from scratch at this point.

Hi Richard,

We have been working with MapPoint and OLAP from long time ago. In
fact, in a couple of months, we will try to sell our application
worldwide (based on MapPoint ocx). At this moment we are preparing the
app for working in Vista (a huge challenge by now :-( ), but I hope in
a couple of weeks/months it will be ready to be tested and deployed.
We use the same approach you mentioned before, but making easier
user's life through a very friendly user interface. It allows you as
an OLAP admin to create Olap data sources in less than 1 hour, and
once you have done this, you can redistribute the data sources file to
each user, and I can tell you they will no need your assistance any
more to create the maps for themselves (they will be able to filter/
select all dimensions/measures you want and the program will create
the mdx query for you). In just one click they will have the map ready
to be used!

If you are really interested on this, please send me an email to
julioodg@gmail.com, I would like to count on a couple of "tester
friends" around the world. Of course you will be able to profit for
your effors after testing :-)
