Unable to open MMC

Good afternoon.

I have a Windows 2003 (with SP2 installed) in production that seems to be 
running just fine (service offerings anyway) but I can't open MMC's.  Event 
viewer, computer management, MMC.EXE in general.  I get no error messages if 
I click on say Event Viewer, do a eventvwr.msc from the command prompt or 
just try and launch MMC.EXE from the command prompt to add a snap-in.  I also 
have Great Plains installed on this box (if that means anything).  MMC's were 
working fine up locally on the server until last week or so.

Researching found a few suggestions.  I tried to re-register the msxml3 file 
which succeeded but MMC's still don't work.  I downloaded 907265 but I can’t 
apply it because SP2 is installed on the server.  I deleted the user profile 
and logged on with a fresh profile but it still won’t launch.  I thought 
about file associations but I can’t even launch MMC.EXE – which is an app
– 
it just comes back to the command prompt.  I tried copying over the MMC.EXE 
file from another Windows 2003 SP2 server (which I know it works on that 
server) but no luck yet.

I can access everything remotely.  Connect to the Event Viewer just fine 
from a remote server – no errors in the problematic servers’ event logs.
