Tracing the route of certain e-mails sent

I am paranoically concerned that certain e-mails I send in Thunderbird 
are actually reaching their intended destination. Is there any 
functionality in Thunderbird where I can specify for a particular 
message, that I get back in return an e-mail that gives me traceroute

Yes and no. You can always cc or bcc yourself to see part of the route.
You can always request a return receipt, BUT the recipient may or may
not allow it.

No I need the full route to the main recipient.

I do that but, for certain specific messages, when I neither get back a 
return receipt nor an expected reply from a recipient whom I would 
expect would at least reply, my paranoia kicks in. That is why I wrote

No, that is not the issue. The issue is clearly that I want to know if 
the recipient received my message.

And that feature is ? Return receipt ? And if I do not get back returned 
receipt even if I request it ?
