Troubleshooting newsgroups

Can anyone point me to how to troubleshoot a problem in Thunderbird 
version 2.0.0.12 (20080213)?  I am missing messages from newsgroups on 
the msnews.microsoft.com server.  The first sign of the problem was when 
opening a thread on 11/04 a message appeared that the message had 
expired and to click here to delete all expired messages.  I clicked and 
and now I can only get a few headers - none for 11/04 and a few for 
12/04 and none for 13/04.
I have un subscribed and subscribed again to the groups but the download 
of messages ends with those previously received on 10/04.  Other 
newsgroups such as this one appear to be behaving as expected.

The two newsgroups that I use most are: 
microsoft.public.expression.webdesigner and 
microsoft.public.frontpage.client

What is the retention period that you've assigned for this newsgroup 
(right click on its folder, select Properties)?

 Thank you for responding.  At present I have set the 
expression.webdesigner NG to - Don't delete any messages.  Prior to this 
problem it was set to - Use server defaults.  The 
public.frontpage.client NG is still set to - Delete messages more than

Thanks, for your trouble.

I recall, sorry I failed to do that earlier:
the expired state indicates that the message in Tb's message index file 
(.msf) has been removed from the server. Tb gives you the option to scan 
the message index and remove any other ones that got expired.

I would hope this explains what happened.
