"Trash" is a UNIX formatted mbox file, that contains all the messages
in
your trash folder.
"Trash.msf" is an indexing file, that Thunderbird uses when display
the
list of messages in your trash folder.

When you delete a message, it is not really removed from the mbox file.
It is marked as deleted. Thunderbird sees that marking, and knows not to
display the message. To remove all messages marked as deleted, from a
folder, you need to compact the folder. You can do that by either:
* selecting the folder then using the menu File-->Compact_Folders. See
<http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/menu#filecompactfolders>.
* right-clicking on the folder, and selecting "Compact".

And if I remember correctly, using the "Empty Trash" function will
automatically compact your trash folder.

You might want to turn it on. Options/Advanced/Network and Disk Space

Check the box "Compact Folders when it will save over ??? KB. The
default of 100 KB is probably fine.

Hi,

I am not very familiar with the internal workings of Thunderbird but I
notice that the even when I have deleted everything out of my Trash folder
Trash.msf is about 1,000 KB and Trash is about 44,500 KB

What is the difference with these 2 files?

Why doesn't Trash go to 0 KB when I delete all of the messages in my Trash
Folder?

TIA

Peter

Thanks Lou,

That fixed the problem.

Is this an automated process that is not turned on or is it some thing that
you should do regularly?

Regards

Peter
