After years of running TB and FF, I just clicked
on newsgroup news.microsoft.com
and got a report
Cannot connect to server news.microsoft.com.
The connection was refused......

works either way. I have setup using msnews.
Tony's question confirmed they are either having a problem or are going
through down time repairs. although you would think they would do this
stuff in the middle of the night when most people other than night owls
are in bed.
But then Mozilla does the same except they do announce they will be down.

you most likely can get to it from msnews.microsoft.com server.
I use to get post from news.microsoft.com and notice delays in getting
responses. Turns out new.microsoft.com is a mirror. the actual main
server is msnews ...
Just for kicks try the following:
create the msnews account. then once setup try subscribing. I bet the
group you are interested in is on that server as well.
