| Update() method fails inexplicably |
 |
Mon, 06 Mar 2006 17:18:34 GMT |
I know that this a C-centric forum, and while I posted this in the UCS
forum, I also see that this forum is one of the more-active forums. Folx
here might have some ideas to offer, and I'm certainly out of ideas.
I've written a Perl script that uses UCS to read and modify selected User
objects in an eDirectory tree. Everything works except the Update() method.
The Environment:
Perl v5.8.4 on NetWare v6.5 SP5 (also tried Perl v5.8.0 on NetWare v6.0
SP3)
The Problem:
I'm able to authenticate to eDirectory just fine. I can instantiate an
NWFilter object and collect a list of User objects. I can read the Values
of
their Attributes using the GetFieldValue() method. I can change the Values
using the SetFieldValue() method.
However, the moment I try to commit the changes to eDirectory, with a call
to Update(), it fails. The changes are never made. As you probably know, i
Perl the return value is Boolean, and neglects to include any
eDirectory-specific error codes.
Another thread here in the Forums, from last August, suggested not
checking the return value of Update(), that if Update() was simply called,
it would work. My experience, however, is that
$success=$Entry->Update();
and
$Entry->Update();
give the same error.
When I try running Perl with both the -c and -w parameters, they report no
syntactical errors. Using the -w parameter alone makes no difference
either.
The credentials I'm using to access eDirectory have the Supervisor right
to the [Root] of the eDirectory Tree. I have also verified the Effective
Rights the account has on the specific User object being modified when
Update() fails. Finally, I coded my Perl script to avoid trying to modify
objects that are Aliases, have been locked by Intruder Lockout, or are
Disabled.
I have tried running the script on a server that doesn't host any
eDirectory replicas, and also on a server hosting the Master replica of
the Partition containing the User objects being modified.
Suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi
You might post the code you are using. Also, on the eDirectory server if
you load dstrace with +areq +abuf and file on, you should look at the
dstrace.log file after the problem occurs, to determine the nds error. That
may help pin down the problem.
Thank you

I'll work on capturing a trace - does it matter if the server I'm running
the code on hosts an eDirectory replica or not?
Here is my Perl code, starting from the last successful method called
(setFieldValue), to the method that fails (Update):
# Write the new workforceID Attribute
# If the field was blank during getFieldValue, then $wfID will be FALSE,
# and we need to omit the third parameter in the setFieldValue call
if ( ! $wfID )
{
# Field was blank, omit third parameter
$success = $Entry->setFieldValue("workforceID", $ss_numbers);
# This works fine
}
else
{
# Field had a value, include third parameter
$success = $Entry->setFieldValue("workforceID", $ss_numbers,
$wfID);
}
if ( ! $success )
{
# Problem - exit immediately, after logging out of
# eDirectory gracefully and closing logfile
print LOGFILE "nERROR in SetFieldValue method for workforceID on
Entry $entrycount: $ObjectCN ($Longname)n";
# Close the logfile
close(LOGFILE);
# Logout
$edirobj->logout();
die "nERROR in SetFieldValue method for workforceID on
Entry $entrycount: $ObjectCN ($Longname)n";
}
# Use the Update method to commit the changed Object to eDirectory
$success = $Entry->Update();
# This consistently fails
if ( ! $success )
{
# Problem - exit immediately, after logging out of
# eDirectory gracefully and closing the logfile
print LOGFILE "nERROR in Update method on
Entry $entrycount: $ObjectCN ($Longname)n";
# Close the logfile
close(LOGFILE);
# Logout
$edirobj->logout();
die "nERROR in Update method on
Entry $entrycount: $ObjectCN ($Longname)n";
}

I am getting no output at all from DSTRACE. I am running DSTRACE and the
Perl script on the server (NetWare v6.5 SP5 with Perl v5.8.4 and eDir
8.7.3.7) that hosts the Master replica of the partition holding the
relevant User objects.

Hi
I'm embarassed to say I can't figure out how to get the actual nds error
number from within the perl script, although that would be most helpful.
The ucs forum might be able to help there. But I'd really like to get the
nds error. I don't know why dstrace isn't showing you anything. If the
server you're running from includes a read/write or master replica of the
user you're logging in as and the user you're changing, I can't see a reason
why it would make a connection with another server. However, you might set
the PrefServer property on the nwdir object just to make sure.
The following code works fine for me. I'm using just a string for the
update, since you didn't include the value you are using, can you tell me
what that is? Or anything else I may have guessed at that is different than
what you are doing? Following the code is my dstrace.log for running
dstrace with +areq, +abuf and +auth in a case where I log in as a user
without rights. You can see that the -672 is most helpful...
require Perl2UCS;
my ($Copyright, $Date, $Description, $MajorVersion, $MinorVersion, $Name,
$Revision, $result, $error);
