"NS upgrade" question

"NS upgrade" question
Sun, 21 Jan 2007 14:18:35 -080
I still run NS 7.2 with WIN98SE on a P3, and it's all fine. My wife's
P4, xp, laptop is starting to give some General Fault errors re:
netscape.exe, when trying to open some popular sites, so I'm thinking
that the best solution may be for me to upgrade her NS 7.2, instead of
trying to get 7.2 working properly, but what would be the next
"logical"
version to choose for an upgrade? The "functionality" of 7.2 was fine
as
our needs for NS are limited in terms of "features", etc. For her
sake,
I'd like to keep as close to the "look and feel" of 7.2 as possible.

Any opinions are welcome, as I haven't been following the discussions on
the subsequent versions of NS.

we have to know exactly what the error message says, and does it occurs
on all sites or some. If some, then you'd have to post a link or two so
someone can go and check it out.

upgrade to what? Net 7.2 is the last version of that line. There is
nothing after that, except for Net 8.x, but that version is not an
upgrade, as its a browser only. There are rumours that a newer Net 7.x
might be on the horizon. But as I said, thats a rumour and when it will
come out, nobody knows.

Actually, there is sort of an upgrade. Its called SeaMonkey:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/

Let me tell you the story. Net 7.2 is based on a program called Mozilla
Suite 1.7.2. The only difference was Net had all the Netscape/AOL
addons and bonuses. Net 7.2 died on the block and Moz went on to
version 1.7.13, then the Moz people decided to drop the Suite program.
However, a few of the Moz developers, users, and others didn't want the
Suite program to die, so they formed the SeaMonkey council and came out
with SeaMonkey. SM picks up where Moz left off.

Basically, if you know how to use Net, then you can use SM. There is
really no learning curve. Whatever you can do in Net, you can do in SM,
they're almost the same program. Furthermore, SM can pick up your Net
7.2 data, mail, bookmarks, passwords, etc, and start using them. The
reason you should upgrade to SM 1.1 because is years ahead of Net 7.2,
with lots of bug and security fixes and many other fixes.

Peter-

Thanks so much for the VERY informative post. As you can tell, I've been
out of touch, but did try out Seamonkey when it first came out on my
Win98 computer. I've been using NS, ever since it was kinda of a
renaming of mosaic, etc. We'll give seamonkey a try, and your opinions
about the increased security, etc. are very much appreciated. I don't
have to get to this group often anymore, but I've ALWAYS received a
quick, to the point, and courteous reply.

Many thanks,

Jack

PS: Perhaps, I'll put it back on my win98 machine, as I don't recall any
problems, but it was very new, and still being reviewed, so I stayed

SM 1.1 works very well with win98, as thats I OS I have, so I should
know. But future versions, I think starting with SM 1.5, they will be
dropping win98, winME, winNT and a few others. I'm not looking forward
to that.
