do public access printers have to have NDPS firmware?
Just from reading the CNA study guide, it seems to follow that they do.
Non-NDPS printers require Gateways and Printer Agents on servers.
But..."you...create a new Printer Agent...This creates a corresponding
NDPS
Printer object immediately." (p.592) But Public Access Printers don't
have
corresponding objects. In other words, once you involve P.A. and Gateway,
it becomes a controlled access printer, doesn't it?

NO.
You create a Public Access Printer from within the NDPS Manager PSM module.
The Public Access Printer is associated with a Printer Agent and a Gateway
in the PSM, but does not have a corresponding object in eDir and it does
*not* become a controlled access printer.
I am refraining from any comments on your quotes, as regarding these you can
contact the author of the book for clarifications about his statements.
My recommendation would be to use the *official* Novell Self Study Kits
(course 3016 for NW6.5 or 3001 for NW 6.0) or read the documentation at
support.novell.com

Further to my earlier post, if I understand correctly, in Netware 6.5 SP3
(or maybe even earlier) Novell no longer supports Public Access Printers.
Following is a snip from the Netware 6.5 iPrint documentation at
http://www.novell.com/documentation/nw65/index.html?page=/documentation/nw65/ipr
int/data/akexxjc.html
Quote:
Are any public access printers in my print system?
Many companies implemented print systems with public access
printers---printers that are accessible to anyone. As security and budgets
have become important issues, companies are migrating their public access
printers to control access printers so that access to the printers can be
managed through eDirectoryTM.
Using the Print Manager Health Monitor, you can quickly scan all printers
and determine if any public access printers still exist in the print system
by generating a report of printer agents using the Associated NDS Printers
report item. As you scan the report, look for printers with a listing of
False, meaning they do not have an associated eDirectory Printer object. If
a printer does not have an associated Printer object, then it is a public
access printer.
IMPORTANT: We recommend that all public access printers be converted to a
controlled access printer by associating an eDirectory Printer object with
the printer agent. This lets you to manage the printer through iManager, use
the printer with iPrint, and take advantage of advanced iPrint features like
auditing.
End of Quote
Nevertheless, I believe that Public Access Printers can still be created
using Netware Administrator or the PSM module at the server console, but
haven't tested that lately. Would not place an emphasize on this objective
while studying for CNA or CNE, as obviously it is obsolete. The only
possible questions you might encounter on your exam would be bullets
regarding the advantages of a Controlled Access Printer over a Public Access
Printer.

The book in question is the Novell authorized study guide, by Novell
press. I would expect support staff here to find it informative to learn
what is causing the confusion to students in Novell textbooks. I do not
bring up other books published by other publishing companies.

Novell Official Curriculum and Self Study Guides are authored and published
by Novell Training Services (formerly, Novell Education), whereas Novell
Press books are authored by private/freelance authors and published thru
Que. This is no reason for mistakes or confusing statements to penetrate
into the books, however we all know mistakes are human and such things could
happen.
IMHO, the purpose of this forum is to answer questions and clarify possible
misunderstandings, which I hope I have done in my previous posts, including
links to the official Novell documentation and resources. Continuation of an
argument why the author of a book, even if it is a Novell Press book,
mis-wrote a statement or try to understand why he wrote the statement in the
way he wrote it (as if we were trying to understand the Bible), is IMHO
totally useless, moreover, in this specific case of Public Access Printers,
which is obsolete and will probably not even be mentioned in the next
version of the study guides.
