Of course they didn't; it was an absolute stinker of a stopgap solution
that only came about because Windows 2000 wasn't going to be everything
it was supposed to be. The 9x/NT unification was delayed by a .1 (~2
years) to Windows XP.
Further parallels, well, they shall be left to the reader... I'm
ambivalent on the subject, and still run 2000 at work. I'll leave
upgrading to the latest and greatest releases to the Apple faithful.
