Just installed Rockbox on my iPod mini (1st generation) - I have to admit
that I'm *really* impressed.
Anyone else here play with this or with the version of Linux that runs on
iPods?
What about hardware mods - anyone replace their battery (I have, very
easy to do) or upgrade the flash drive? Flash drive upgrade might be
next - an 8 GB CFII card is running about $70 these days, might be a
cheap way to double my storage.
Wondering what others' experience is.

I colleague of mine has played with it. He is very impressed with Rockbox,
but OTOH Linux for iPod seems to be a product you don't want to install
because it is unstable an is very poor in functionality compared to rockbox.

That's been my impression from reading about both - Rockbox also seems to
have a much smaller memory footprint as well.

But on the flip side it also seems to have a serious negative effect on
the battery life. :-(

Just received my 16 GB CF card - found one for $60 through newegg. It's
installed now, just restoring the contents of the microdrive.
This will be interesting - the HOWTOs that I've read suggest using iTunes
to restore the firmware; the firmware is just stored on a partition on
the microdrive, though, so my thought is that I *should* be able to just
image/restore the microdrive itself. Unless Apple puts a checksum in
that says what size the drive is when the firmware is updated (but that
would be weird). Once restored, I should also be able to use GNU Parted
to resize the data partition.
Just wish I could tell how far it was in restoring it. If it works, then
"dd" would seem to be a way to do this and retain your existing
configuration.
