Actually, they can, have and will force people to upgrade, just like
they have every time in the past.
Sure XP still has support, but does Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000,
of course not. Same WILL be true eventually of XP. And Microsoft
will give people incentives to stop supporting XP.... so eventually
out of frustration, people will upgrade (or at best, they are forced

They haven't every time. Again I will point out Me. When a product is
terrible and has huge resistence, in the past at least they did not force
people to use said product. In the case of Vista there is little they can
do to force people to use it. If they suddenly said they were immediately
dropping support for XP trust me there would be an extremely large
backlash. There's no way at all that would fly as I'm sure there are
plenty of companies with tens of thousands of desktops still running XP
and those companies have pretty powerful voices. As it is I see it's
slated to be out of support in April 2009. Considering that systems
integrators can buy licenses until Jan 2009, I wouldn't be surprised to
see support extended until 2010--the expected release of Windows 7.
The only thing M$ can try to do is say XP can't be sold after a certain
date, but OEMs have a way around that. So if that can't even stop people
from continuing to use and buy XP, why bother? They need to worry about
focusing on Windows 7 so that it avoids the problems of Vista. That makes
more sense rather than to try and force people to an OS that is total and
utter crap.
