I actually got to use the TI-83 on the exams. In fact the calculator was
considered required for the course. We had to do it the long way a couple
of times for the homework when we first hit the chapter on standard
deviation, but the rest of the way we could just use the calculator. The
instructor said the importance of the class was to learn what the numbers
meant and how to apply them rather than to learn how to manually arrive at
the numbers.
